I hope you all had a good start into the new year? I'm still very busy with some school work. But in between I try to relax and find some inspiration in my daily life. I've enjoyed some wonderful winter-weather we have had here. It has been very cold and snowy. We also had visitors, lovely relatives from Finland. :)

Friendship and also simply the winterweather can be so inspiring.
And what is better on a cold winter day than meeting a friend, talking and having some tea and cookies? If only the day had more hours, so that I could do that more often...
Today I'm looking at these beautiful cakestands instead and thinking of chocolate treats to fill them with. They are handmade out of second-hand plates by Swedish blogger Mia, available in her online shop Mia Rosa.

Trine Thorsen: winter inspiration

We have wonderful winter weather, it's so cold, -10 °C, really something for Berlin. And there is still some snow on the ground. The Germans aren't really used to this kind of weather, at least here in the city. But I enjoy it. I found these suitable winter images in Trine Thorsen's inspiring portfolio. Inspiring workspaces

I hope you have a good weekend. I'm spending lot's of time at my desk working for university right now. I think it's important to create a space where you feel at home, so that working there is comfortable.

This is actually a workspace for children from the Swedish Elle Interiör. But it works also for grown ups with a love for color and humor. Found via Remodelista.

Transformation on a budget

I enjoyed the New York Times article about a Loft-transformation for $5,000, that I found via Darling Dexter. It became such an inviting place, sunny and serene.

News from Marimekko

Marimekko has launched a new tableware line called Oiva, designed by Sami Ruotsalainen and decorated with the patterns Siirtolapuutarha and Räsymatto by the talented Maija Louekari. The cute patterns are also available as fabrics.

I think they will be added right to my christmas wishlist.

And some other news:

We are celebrating a huge anniversary here in Berlin: 20 Years since the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I was a little child when it happened but nevertheless it's very moving. I can't imagine what it would have been like to grow up in a city encircled by a wall.

These interiors look so inviting, stylish and relaxed at the same time. I feel so drawn to the mix of styles, design objects combined with simple IKEA and thrifted furniture. And I adore all the art groupings on the walls. Also typography used as interior decoration is something I really never get tired of.

Fleamarket find

This little brass deer is a recent fleamarket find and it's now living on the shelf above our bed. The carnations I picked on our balkony. It's getting chilly, fall has arrived. It's nice to get some of the flowers inside, that are still in bloom. Have a great and sunny weekend!

I adore this tea-party I found through Party Perfect. Merrilee from mer mag created the decoration for her party out of Ikea fabrics, thrifted plates and some DIY elements. Having your friends over for some tea and cookies at these beautiful tables sounds like so much fun.

Rom 123: black and white + a splash of color

Here comes some interior inspiration for you from Norwegian interior magazine rom123. This is a home on only 40 sqm. A lot of neat space saving ideas are needed. And although the black and white plus a little color wouldn't be anything for my home (I need more color :) ), it sure inspires me everytime. It looks so fresh and it really suits this small apartment, it makes the space look tidy and organized.

It seems, that I'm quite into Swedish things after I came back from Stockholm. No wonder, there is so much good design and beauty to discover.
This home of Swedish graphic designer Helena Schaeder Söderberg and her family I found while browsing flickr.
After some googling I found out that Holly Becker interviewed Helena a while back for cookie magazine, with some great answers from Helena.
So let's go and visit her home:

Blog find: Dos Family

The Swedish blog Dos Family is the collaboration of photographer Jenny Brandt and designer Isabelle Halling McAllister. (Found via Fine little day)

One very inspiring feature on their blog is called Dos Visits, a collection of real swedish homes, that Jenny has photographed. A source of so much eyecandy: inspiring, eclectic homes filled with vintage finds and colors. I could browse them for hours.

Stockholm: Rosendal's Garden

Rosendal's Garden was one of my favorite places in Stockholm. It is an open garden, with the main purpose of presenting biodynamic (organic) garden cultivation to the general public.

Rosendal's Garden is located on a huge area with a park, flower- and vegetable fields, greenhouses a wonderful café and shop. The café offers lunch, soups, coffee and cakes with only organic ingredients. And you can buy products from their own production. We bought some honey with orangejuice and orange slices. Really delicious! But unfortunately it's soon eaten up.

A really unique place, every corner is beautiful, so peaceful and relaxing.

Stockholm: Södermalm + shops

One of the parts of Stockholm we enjoyed most was Södermalm. Especially the SoFo area in the east of Södermalm where you can find lot's of cute little shops. Unique design and second hand stores, lovely cafés and bars.

We biked a lot in Stockholm. Bike lanes run throughout the city, it's a really great way to move around and you have always the possibility to stop when you see something interesting.

The northern part of Södermalm has many, many viewpoints, which offer great views over Gamla Stan.

I read Emma's Stockholm guide (Thanks Emma) before our trip and one place she recommended was the café Lasse i parken. A really cozy place with the most delicious chocolate cake. (Image above on the right).

What I really liked were all the parks and green squares. And these little cafés lokated in the parks. This one is the Mosebacke square. Also worth a visit is the Mosebacke etablissement for their beer garden with a wonderful view over the city.

Tantolunden has a huge area of allotment gardens and little garden sheds. We took a stroll through this area, it's a little oasis.

The café (actually there are several of them in Stockholm) we loved most was Vurma. It's a colorful place with an inspiring interior: beautiful wallpaper and wallpaintings, cushions in all kinds of patterns. Plus delicious sandwiches and cakes. Heaven :)

And of course the SoFo area, the eastern part of Södermalm with it's design and second hand shops and cafés. These places we visited and liked a lot:

Blås & Knåda: Gallery and shop with a huge selection of unique pottery and glass objects, a really inspiring place

Café string: Fun place for sandwiches, salad and playing some backgammon

Morkarin: Children's stuff and interior decoration - unfortunately closed when we were there but it looked fabulous through the windo

Stockholm: Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is Swedish for old town. Our Hostel named Best Hostel was seated in Gamla Stan, we had a wonderful view from our window over the sea (image above). We saw the ships and cruisers coming and going.

Stockholm is such a lovely city, the original buildings are well-preserved, the historical city centre has not been damaged in a war as here in Berlin. So I really enjoyed these old and original buildings, their structure and their colors.

We looked for the narrow and silent streets in Gamla Stan, for places without tourists. We found some but not many.

These are some places I recommend in Gamla Stan:

• Have a hot choclate and a Swedish cinnamon bun at Chokladkoppen.

• Visit Stadsmission for vintage finds.

• Also worth a visit: the Sweden Bookshop, which offers a huge range of translated swedish literature and books about Sweden.

Anu Tuominen

As I told you in my last post, I adore the works of Finnish artist Anu Tuominen. I saw some of them in the Museum of modern art in Espoo called EMMA this summer.

Her artwork is so full of joy, colors and humor. Her pieces seem to tell us to pause for a moment and notice the beauty in our everyday lifes.

• I love my new tea towel I brought from Stockholm, it's from Almedahls and you can purchase it also online at New House Textiles

These are all from Helsinki:

• the postcards I bought in the Museum of modern art EMMA in Espoo, a city next to Helsinki. The postcards show works by Finnish artist Anu Tuominen. I adore her work. The card on the bottom right shows an installation made out of potholders. I want to start my own collection and display them on my kitchen wall (Mieke & Veronik and Elisabeth were also inspired by her).

• the vintage grey potholder is the first one of my collection. I found it at Fida

• the bird is a brooch by You Complete Me, I bought it on an art and design market in Helsinki

I'm back

Hi, I'm back from Scandinavia (Stockholm and Helsinki). Our time in Stockholm was great. We enjoyed the city very much. And my stay in Helsinki was relaxing, it was all about meeting family and friends over there. In some days I will show you some pictures from our Stockholm trip. I still have to go through all the photos...

This is a nook of our living room, the cushion on the right is new. It's from Marimekko. I bought it in Helsinki in the Marimekko outlet for 5 euro. Great! The fabric is designed by Fujiwo Ishimoto Marimekko seems to have taken it out of production. The cushion on the left is also from Marimekko, I bought it last year. It shows the pattern Purnukka by Erja Hirvi.

Hello from Stockholm

This will be my last post for a while. We arrived in Stockholm yesterday and after two weeks here I'll be heading to Helsinki. So this blog will be almost silent for the next four weeks.
Today we were visiting the Designhouse Stockholm with many great design products (as these things below).

In the south of Stockholm, Södermalm there is also a lot to discover. Today we were biking there, sitting in Café String, visiting lovely shops and relaxing in a park... we had a really nice day. Emma's Stockholm guide is very helpful!

Mustertussi notebooks

Today I want to show you some beautiful notebooks I found at a craft-material shop here in Berlin called modulor. (Btw: Modulor is worth a visit for everyone who loves to make things.)

These handmade notebooks by German artist Sabine Hartung are available under the name Mustertussi. They are made out of found and/or scanned material e.g. wallpaper, wood, lace, paperbags and fabrics. Sabine Hartung uses also paper in unusual colors, I like the black ones and the neon-series.

Little peek

You might have wondered why it has been so silent here on my blog lately. I've been so busy doing things for my university. Christine asked me about my studies. So I thought I'd show you a little peek into my illustration work I've been doing this semester. (Click on the images to see them bigger) These illustrations were originally inspired by the lyrics to the song "Promises like piecrust" by Carla Bruni.
Now my vacation started. And next week we are flying to Stockholm. It's a strange but good feeling to suddenly have so much free time. I hope you have a good time, too!

Today I want to introduce you to the work of photographer Ieva Jansone and her blog Dinge Die Ich Mag (German for: things that I like). She writes in German, but her beautiful photograhphy speaks to you without any language as you can see below.

Ieva was born in Latvia and after studying in Riga and Denmark she came to Germany where she is living and working since. Her photography transports so much feeling and has almost a tactile character, that I adore.

Summer Cottage, Chicago Home + Garden

I was so charmed by this cute little cottage with a great story behind it, when I read about it on Apartment Therapy.

Tereasa Surratt and her husband restored and renovated this cabin after moving it hundreds of miles from Central Illinois to Wisconsin. And I found out Tereasa is publishing a book about the whole process of rescuing the cottage. It will be available in 2010, for more information check out her website. This place makes me want to start my holiday right away. What about you?

Onni shop, Helsinki

Last week I stumbled upon the website of the brick and mortar store Onni that is located in Helsinki, Finland. It was founded by the designers Susan Elo and Tuula Pöyhönen and it's now run by Tuula in one part of a loft that is actually Tuula's home. What a surprise to find the Etsy shop Lineanongrata by illustrator Julia Freund! I was already familiar with her online portfolio and was so happy to see that she also sells her beautiful work as prints, postcards and pins.
German born Julia studied graphic design in Paris. Now she lives with her boyfriend on a winery in Gabian, South France. Wow! That sure is a really inspiring surrounding.
And she also writes a blog that is worth checking!

I was so inspired by the Flickr photostream of Italian weaver Donatella (Doni) Chiesa, that I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you.

In her own words: "I studied weaving in Italy and then I did a course in Bradford - UK - in Textile Design for handwovens, which is quite a popular course among handweavers. It was the place where I really understood how to get inspiration - literally from anything! - and to translate it into fabric with different structures. What I love about weaving is that you create fabric from an idea and the result is always unique and truly yours!"

We won't live in our current home for very long anymore so that wallpapering unfortunately doesn't make any sense. But there will be some wallpapered walls in our future home for sure.
Until then I will daydream a littlebit. These two wallpapers designed by Julia Rothman for Hygge & West I like very much. The blue one would be perfect in a bedroom.

Hygge & West also carries these pretty ceramic items from Casalinga. They could look quite good on my white walls. Don't you think?

Hyggelig: typographic wall decoration

Berlin based Catherine (I'm a regular reader of her lovely blog Hyggelig) likes to decorate her home with letters. Her newest addition is this "Hug Me" in her bedroom, such a nice idea to attach them vertically to the wall. The letters are vintage cinema letters Catherine bought at the german online shop Freundts that I wrote about before. Find their cinema letters right here.

And here is a peek into Catherine's dining room with a huge C on the wall, also from Freundts. I like all the red details in both rooms and the cute lamps above the dining table.

Outdoor wishlist

I hope you are enjoying your weekend! We have the prettiest sunshine. Perfect outdoor weather. We are the happy owners of a balkony, but we are in need of a sunshade, the direct sun gets too hot in the summer time. And some other beautiful items would be nice, too (if only my wallet was full enough). The walls of the house we are living in are painted yellow, so I gathered some products fitting the yellow walls. But I'm totally into blue, purple and mauve tones lately, so I made a collection with some blue and purple splashes, too. It's so much fun to make these.

Jeanette Lunde is a Norwegian graphic designer and blogger. Her lovely blog Fryd + Design is one of my daily reads and if you don’t already know it, make sure to check it out to enjoy all the eye-candy Jeanette is creating over there. She is so good in capturing the beauty in the little details of life.
And also her home with it's Scandinavian style is very beautiful. It's white and bright and I like Jeanette's use of colors and beautiful patterns throughout the house. It's no surprise that her home has been featured already in several magazines e.g. Rom 123 and Sans.
I'm sure you will enjoy her home as much as I do.

Please introduce yourself.
My name is Jeanette Lunde, I live in Skien, Norway with my husband and two sweet girls. I'm a graphic designer and teacher, but am for the moment at home with our daughter Alma.
I'm planning a small shop that I hope will be done due May. This shop will containe dresses for baby-girls, illustrations, babyblanket and other things that I enjoy and feel like making.

Tell us a littlebit about your house, how long do you live in it? Who do you live with?
We live in an old house that used to be part of a big farm. We moved here five years ago, my husband Geir, my daughter Mathea and I. This december little Alma came to join us, and finally we are four, as Mathea said.
We have been renovating the whole house and it's a house with a big mix of old and new, with white walls and splashes of colors. A happy house for a happy family.

Where is your favorite place in your house? And why?
I think it's at the kitchen table in the center of the house, or maybe in front of the fireplace or behind my sewingmachine...hmm
I really dont know! Different rooms for different reasons. I love my house and the big windows that lets the light flow in.

Do you have a favorite furniture, accessoire or art piece? Please tell us about it.
I have different pieces that I like, but I love the old pieces that I got after my grandpa and grandma. Especially the old butterfly-tray that my grandpa bought in Brasil on one of his many trips.
I LOVE my kitchenaid because I almost use it every day and the wall sculpter that we got on our wedding from my uncels and aunts.
There are so many things, I could list up forever, but most of all I love the people in my house that makes me smile and makes my day.

Blog-finds from Blogging Your Way

Do you remember that I mentioned the e-course I joined? The four weeks lasting course called Blogging your Way was run by the lovely Holly Becker from Decor8. With her huge blogging-experience Holly was a great teacher. The course was such an instructive and fun experience. Also I got to know so many nice people and their blogs and today I want to introduce you to some of them:

Let's start with Sam's notebook where Sam, an Australian mother living in Sweden, collects her beautiful finds as interiors, products, accessoires and clothes. Sam has a really great eye and taste.

UK-based Susannah Conway's blog Ink on my fingers is bursting of her serene photography. Her images combined with her poetic words make her blog to a wonderful place to visit and relax.

Sophia from Greece has recently launched her blog Finely Inc. that is dedicated to interiors and decoration. I enjoyed her post about the photographer Paul Massey and I'm looking forward to her coming posts!

The Red Thread is written by Lisa Tilse, a talented artist from Australia. She is blogging about her inspirations, observations and creations introducing many new (to me) designers and Etsy sellers.

Tiina is from Finnland (that immediately made me a fan of her, because I'm also a half Finn ;) ). Her blog Sparkling Ink is filled with yummy recipies, her finds from magazines and beautiful decorating ideas.

And last but not least I want to introduce you to the blog of US-based mixed-media artist Sarah Ahearn. Her blog is a really happy place, so colorful and positive. I always enjoy seeing artist's inspirations, workspaces and a little bit behind the scenes.

I have known her poetic illustrations and calligraphy, these posters are different but as appealing as everything else of her work. Yesterday Re-Nest introduced 10 Things Made from Upcycled Sweaters. That led me to Five Forty, an Etsy shop offering these eco-friendly hand woven rag rugs. They are woven in a special way with recycled textiles used for both warp and weft.

Her blog is all about living in a modest mid century cement brick house, renovating and decorating it. Morgan is not only a fellow blogger but also an owner of an Etsy shop filled with mid century and danish modern items.

Please introduce yourself and your Etsy-shop.
Hi all, I'm Morgan, owner and restorer of The Brick House. The house is located in a small boring retirement community in the far reaches of Southern California. I scavenge old ladies houses and local thrift stores for the best in Mid Century and Danish Modern design to entice and excite at my Etsy store, Brick House Vintage.

Tell us a littlebit about your house, how long do you live in it? With who do you live in it?
The Brick House was custom built by a local mason in 1951. Its pretty unique on our block and is completely made of cement bricks. Modestly sized and full of original details it hasn't been Home Depot'd over the years - it is also a bitch to fix. I met the grandson of the mason who built it when getting quotes to repair some plaster. There were no exciting stories, just a simple guy who built the house for his family. I live with my boyfriend known as "The Boy" and my dog known as "Iggy Julius Huggleman". We've been living at the Brick House for just over a year.

Where is your favorite place in your house? And why?
My living room. We never use it. We have "important" conversations there. No television, no computer - just a bright clean room filled with some of my favorite things. Sometimes I stretch out on the big gray sofa to relax and play with Iggy.

Do you have a favorite furniture, accessoire or art piece?
All the art is my favorite. I went to art school, I work in the arts, and I'm a painter. I collect a ton of vintage paintings, weird art, needlepoint as well as my friends work. I constantly curate and arrange the pieces in the house to change the space. I think artwork makes a house. Its the first thing I look at when going into other peoples homes. I always want the artwork to be a little jarring and unnerving in the otherwise calm and beautiful space to keep things energetic.

Have you any tips for finding treasures on fleamarkets or thrift stores?
Be patient. Look through junk. Know what you like. Go ALL the time. Thats really the only way to find deals, consistent looking. Lots of times you'll find nothing. Don't get discouraged. Be patient. Be patient. Be patient.
Go to high priced vintage stores for inspiration and to see quality pieces. Touch them, ask questions, do research. Then really look out for those shapes and materials you love. Training your eye is the hardest part. It can get overwhelming looking at all the crappy stuff to spot a really rad piece. Once you do though, its like heaven. A great piece at a good deal can't be beat - its like double chocolate cake with crack topping.

MeBox

Fun is useful in many cases, also when it comes to organizing. Everybody knows the good old cardboard boxes but the MeBox has a special labeling feature to add a fun and decorative twist to it. The ends of each box have a grid of perforated discs that when punched out reveal a letter, number or symbol.

I found out that the MeBox is a self-initiated project by Graphic Thought Facility, a London based design consultancy. They have some other interesting projects on their site worth checking.

Paper cranes

I'm sorry that it has been so silent over here this week. My university has started again and I've been very busy. I have to find a good rythm to include blogging to the busy days.

How do you guys include blogging into your life, your job, studies, etc.? Do you prepare posts in advance to post on days when you don't have the time, or the mood to blog? Or do you have any other hints?

Back to the topic. Paper cranes are popping up everywhere lately. I collected some different versions and I like to see these all together. Isn't it fun to see what different people with their different creative minds make out of the same topic? Using different materials, colors and media the results are unlimited. Isn't that inspiring?

Isn't this bunny gorgeous? It's named Otto and it's made by Esther aka Essimar. You may know her and her work already but I thought her bunny would fit the easter theme perfectly.

Essimar is one of my favorite Etsy sellers - she has such a talent to make these pieces, cut and printed all by hand. I'm in love with the colors she uses and her graphic and abstract screenprints. Pickles is a Norwegian blog filled with lovely DIY projects as home accessoires, clothing and yummy recipies. Heidi and Anna do a lot of craft projects and come up with their own patterns which they want to share. What a great idea! I especially love the crocheted lampshade and the pouf. Pickles is written in Norwegian, so maybe using google translate is a good idea.

Update: Great news: Heidi and Anna have some of their tutorials available in English now. And there are more to come.

There is a very inspiring sneak peek over at Design Sponge. It's the home of floral designer Nicolette Owen of Nicolette Camille. It is dreamy and feminine. And of course it is full of flowers and plants. One of my favorite details is the intense blue wall in the picture on the bottom.

I wish you a great weekend with these colorful and happy looking paper collages by Carl Kleiner. I like the geometry and simplicity of the "The Bærtling wannabe" series seen above. In the images below you see pieces of the series "Everyday Geometry". I love his idea of making collages of paper items used in our everyday lifes. To look at them in this way, they get a new kind of beauty.

Knitted lamps by Ilot Ilov

These wonderful lamps Matt (image above) and Ray (image on the bottom) by the german design collective Ilot Ilov are knitted and come with a several meters long cable. They are made for being moved and played with. Definitely they are beautiful and look like fun at the same time. For example it would be fun to create a drawing with the cable on the ceiling or the wall.

Look at these lovely postcards from A View To by photographer and stylist Imke Klee. I have known her flickr for a while. And I'm happy, that these lovely collections made it into her Etsy shop! She also makes and sells very pretty fabric accessoires as necklaces, brooches and key rings.

Arounna Khounnoraj is not only a designer and co-owner of the shop Bookhou, she is also an talented artist and maker of these tactile and colorful sculptures. I'm so in love with these fun and playful pieces. So inspiring!

Her Attachment Series will be shown from March 6 - 31, 2009 in the Rare Device Gallery in San Francisco. I would be so happy, if I could see Arrouna's wonderful work in person.
